December EventThursday, December 11 2 p.m. Title: Kabul Beauty School: An American Woman Goes Behind the Veil by Deborah Rodriguez
When the author, a hairdresser from Michigan, went to Afghanistan in 2002 as part of an humanitarian aid group, she's confronted with a war-torn country after the fall of the Taliban. Rodriguez's hairdressing skills are quickly utilized, and she establishes a beauty school for Afghan women, who had enjoyed a long tradition of running their own salons before the Taliban took over.
Rodriguez's memoir is a chronicle of her efforts to establish a beauty school in Afghanistan and to revolutionize the lives of Afghan women in a male-ruled culture. The book will at times make the reader laugh with its humor and other times cry at the injustices inflicted on women who live behind the veil.
