Computer Services

Computers are available for public use at each W-TCPL location. The computers provide Internet access, word processing software, and other programs. Specially designated children's computers provide educational applications.

A W-TCPL card in good standing is required to use a public computer. Bring your library card with you to use a computer.

• Children ages 6-12 may not use adult computers unless accompanied by an adult.
• There are computers designated for use exclusively by children.
• Only teens ages 13-18 are permitted to use designated Teen computers.

Internet and Computer Use Guidelines

Any library customer with a library card in good standing or a guest pass may use the library computer reservation system.

• Customers whose accounts are currently in collections cannot use the computers.

• Access to chat rooms is not permitted.

There is a per page charge for printing from all library computers.

Computer Classes

Free classes are offered periodically in topics such as Computer Basics, Introduction to the Internet, and Microsoft Word. Contact the Main Library Tech Center or click here for a schedule of classes. Branch libraries may also offer one-on-one computer instruction; contact any Branch Library for more information.

W-TCPL Wireless Internet FAQ

All W-TCPL locations have wireless capability (Wi-Fi) for personal computers.

1.      What do I need to connect to the wireless network in the library?

You need a 11Mbps 802.11 b or 802.11g wireless network card. Many new laptop computers have wireless built-in. Check with your laptop manufacturer for your options.

2.      Is it difficult to connect to your wireless network?

Not usually. Most laptops that come configured for wireless access can automatically pick up the wireless signal. If yours does not, you will have to know how to use your wireless device's configuration software to connect to the wireless network.

3.     Will my Macintosh/Apple/PDA/Pocket PC/Tablet PC computer work with the library's wireless?
Yes, as long as it supports 802.11b or 802.11g wireless.

4.     Do I need any special software to connect?

You should not need any special software to connect. The drivers for your wireless network card may need to be updated if you are having trouble connecting.

5.     Is technical support available at the library for my wireless device?

No. Technical support from the library staff is not available. You must be familiar with your device and know how to set it up for wireless access.

6.     Is there a charge to use the wireless Internet system? No.

7.     Can I connect to the printers or other software the library offers?

Yes! The wireless network is now connected to the public printers at our Main Library and at each of our Branches. Just click on the wireless printing logo at the bottom of the page when you sign into our wireless network or click on the wireless printing icon at the bottom right side of the WTCPL web site. A small, temporary print client will run on your computer. The print client is only temporary. You will need to run the print client each time you come to the library.

8.     Can I get a virus from an infected computer that is using your wireless network?
Wireless networks do not produce or spread computer viruses. Viruses come from the Internet, often as attachments to email. It is strongly recommended that all users have up- to-date anti-virus protection and all appropriate Windows patches have been applied to your computer.

9.      I'm having trouble connecting, is there anything I can check on my computer?
First, make sure that your wireless card is turned on. Consult your instruction manual for information on how to turn on the wireless capabilities for your device. Make sure that your LAN settings are set to "automatically detect settings" and leave the proxy server settings unchecked. These options can be found in the control panel and Internet options. Also, make sure that your computer is set to obtain the DNS server automatically. This option is found in your TCP/IP network properties.
