Brookfield Library Closed Until Further Notice for Repairs Following Burst Water Pipe

(01/09/2023) – The Brookfield Branch of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 7032 Grove St., is closed until further notice to repair damage caused by a burst water pipe last month.

Warren-Trumbull County Public Library Executive Director Jim Wilkins said a water pipe in the building ruptured in late December during the extremely cold temperatures in the area. Library staff has been working with their insurance company as well as plumbing and contracting professionals to assess the extent of the damage and identify ways to ensure a similar rupture will be prevented in the future.

“We are very fortunate in that we believe the majority of the books and other library materials were not damaged,” Wilkins said. “We immediately took steps to protect the books and have moved them to an off-site location for safe-keeping during the clean-up and repairs in the library.”

Multiple dehumidifiers were placed throughout the building to remove excess moisture from the air, however, water from the leak caused significant damage to some of the drywall, furnishings, equipment, and carpeting. Items damaged by the water have already been removed.

“Unfortunately, most of our computers, printers, the circulation desk, and some shelving will need to be replaced,” Wilkins said.

New carpeting will also need to be installed throughout the building.

The library will remain closed while the clean-up and restoration take place, a process that will also be dependent on supply availability.

“We know this may take several months to remediate the damage, replace some furnishings, and get new carpeting installed,” Wilkins said. “We truly regret the inconvenience we know this may cause our patrons, and we are working to get the library restored and open as quickly as possible.”

Library cardholders with questions about their account may contact any other Warren-Trumbull County Public Library location for more information. Library patrons may also borrow books and other materials from any other library in the system, including locations in Warren, Cortland, Howland, Liberty, and Lordstown. The Bookmobile also makes stops throughout Trumbull County.

During the Brookfield Library closure, books and other library materials may continue to be returned to the Book Return located on the outside of the building.
