Wireless Internet FAQ

About Wireless Internet at the Library

All Warren-Trumbull County Public Library locations have wireless capability (Wi-Fi) for personal computers.

Q. What do I need to connect to the wireless network in the library?
A. You need a 802.11 b/g/n compatible wireless network card. Many new laptop computers have wireless built-in. Check with your laptop manufacturer for your options.

Q. Is there a password to access the wireless network at the library?
A. Yes for security reasons, we have had to password protect our wireless network. The password is freewifi and is the same for all WTCPL locations.

Q. Is it difficult to connect to your wireless network?
A. Not usually. Most laptops that come configured for wireless access can automatically pick up the wireless signal. If yours does not, you will have to know how to use your wireless device’s configuration software to connect to the wireless network.

Q. Will my Mac/Smartphone/Tablet/Ultrabook computer work with the library’s wireless?
A. Yes, as long as it supports 802.11b/g/n.

Q. Do I need any special software to connect?
A. You should not need any special software to connect. The drivers for your wireless network card may need to be updated if you are having trouble connecting.

Q. Is technical support available at the library for my wireless device?
A. No. Technical support from the library staff is not available. You must be familiar with your device and know how to set it up for wireless access.

Q. Is there a charge to use the wireless Internet system?
A. No, there is no charge to access the library’s Wi-Fi!

Q. Can I connect to the printers or other software the library offers?
A. Yes! Public printing is available at all of our locations. Just click on the wireless printing logo at the bottom of the page when you sign into our wireless network or visit our wireless printing page for more information on the ways you can connect and print.

Q. Can I get a virus from using your wireless network?
A. Viruses can come from a variety of sources. It is strongly recommended that all users have up-to-date anti-virus protection and all appropriate update patches have been applied to your computer.

Q. I’m having trouble connecting, is there anything I can check on my computer?
A. First, make sure that your wireless card is turned on. Consult your instruction manual for information on how to turn on the wireless capabilities for your device. Make sure that your LAN settings are set to “automatically detect settings” and leave the proxy server settings unchecked. These options can be found in the control panel and Internet options. Also, make sure that your computer is set to obtain the DNS server automatically. This option is found in your TCP/IP network properties.

Q. Can I access the Wireless Internet System at any library in the W-TCPL system?
A. Yes. Once your computer is configured for one of the locations, it will not need set up again if you visit another W-TCPL location.
